Empowering Youth with Type 1 Diabetes: A First-Hand Account

Hello Readers,

Welcome to my first post on this website, my name is Nahom Semere, I am currently in highschool as I am writing this, and I was diagnosed right before I turned three years old. The first thing I want to say about T1D (Type 1 Diabetes) is that you are in no way, size or form limited by it whatsoever, my mom always told me this when I was growing up. Let’s actually go back to then, the first thing I can say I remembered “waking up” as a kid, was to me getting ready for preschool, having pancakes in the morning. My dad tells me “Not too much syrup, if any at all,” and as a little four or five year old, I did not want to hear this in the morning, I poured some on my plate, ate my pancakes, watched my dad draw out insulin from the little tiny bottles they give you at Walgreens at the time, and then felt the little prick as the needle entered my arm. Most children would cry and scream at the sight of a needle, but I was already “conditioned” as if it were normal. So when I say “as long as I can remember” I no longer mean it as a phrase, I mean I have had diabetes as long as I can physically remember. I want this entire blog to not only be helpful to parents of children with diabetes, or themselves, as well as insightful to the kids with diabetes. Whether you like it or not, you, or someone you know has diabetes, and that can be worrying, stressful even, but it should be nothing to fear, healthy habits and responsibility can easily make this seem almost like it is nothing. In this blog I am specifically focusing on T1D, but this can also help people with T2D, so no discrimination here. writing is not my strongsuit, I realise this while writing but hopefully this is a skill that will grow as I keep doing this. DISCLAIMER, I am not a medical professional in anyway, I will not give advice as to medication dosages, or things that your endocrinologist/doctors would instruct you to do, in the future I hope to add a discussion area to this to allow people to connect and have a safe network to grow their knowledge to best help themselves and/or others. Other than that I do not have much else to say for the first post, I hope your day/week goes amazingly, see you in the next post

Stay in range!!
